Why Materials Matter

Considering your sex toy is going to be in intimate contact with your most delicate body parts, you’ll want to be sure that the materials you choose are going to be body safe. While materials like jelly and rubber might feel nice, they also tend to be porous which makes them difficult to clean. Keeping your toys clean is very important since bacteria left behind can lead to other health issues like thrush. Some people opt to use a condom on toys with porous materials.

Silicone is often a preferred alternative to rubber and jelly as it has a softer surface many people desire but is also easier to keep clean. Unfortunately, you can’t use a silicone based lubricant with this material as it can damage your toy.

Glass and metal are both non-porous, easy to clean and can be used with all personal lubricants. The downside is that they are designed with a harder surface. This isn’t really a bad thing, however! They actually do feel really good and can sometimes be good choices for temperature play.
